Yacht & Marine Surface Protection
TEMPORARY MARINE SURFACE PROTECTION — for fiberglass, decks, interiors and glass
Temporary marine surface protection is a padded, non-slip and reusable protection covering that shields a boat’s finished surfaces while work is underway, then comes off when the job is done. Unlike ceramic coatings or paint protection film, it isn’t permanent. SurfaceLiner supplies Swiss Made protection to fiberglass and custom boat builders, refit yards, shipyards, marinas, captains and crews, on everything from workboats to superyachts.
It installs quickly and easily on the most sensitive surfaces aboard: fiberglass and gelcoat, teak and varnished joinery, chrome and stainless, glass, carpet, upholstery and furniture. That makes it useful from the first day of a build through refits and repairs in the marina.
One dropped tool or paint spill can undo hours of finish work, and on a yacht, every mark costs value. That’s why boat builders and refit teams choose padded, non-slip yacht protection over tape, plastic film or cardboard. It stays in place without tape, cushions impacts, and can be reused from one job to the next.
Our newest product, the MarineLiner boat liner, is built for boat builders, protecting fiberglass and gelcoat inside and out through fabrication and assembly. For refits, heavy traffic and longer outdoor jobs, ALLProtect Original, ALLProtect Red and ALLProtect White cover decks, hazard zones and glass. Both are also built for marine flooring installers, painters and refinishers, detailers and dealer prep teams, anywhere a finished surface needs protecting while other trades work.

Yacht Surface Protection Guide
What to use where, from gelcoat and teak to glass and galley counters
Choosing temporary protection starts with the surface: what it’s made of, what condition it’s in, and what work is happening around it. Here’s how to protect the most common yacht surfaces, and which product fits each one. ALLProtect Red is the same material as ALLProtect Original in high-visibility safety red, so use it anywhere crews need to see where protection starts and ends. Use the diagram as a quick reference, then see each surface below for the details.

Fiberglass & Gelcoat
The most vulnerable finish in any boat shop, from the moment a part comes out of the mold. A padded, light-tack layer protects cured gelcoat and fiberglass from dropped tools, dust and resin drips without tape.
Use: MarineLiner, or ALLProtect Original for heavy traffic
Fully cured surfaces only.
Painted Topsides & Aluminum Boats
Painted hulls and aluminum scuff easily where ladders, stands and equipment touch them in the yard. Residue-tested on painted aluminum under heat, humidity and freezing temperatures.
Use: ALLProtect Original
Teak Decks & Non-Skid Surfaces
Teak decks and non-skid surfaces (the textured anti-slip finish molded, painted or padded onto decks, steps and swim platforms) take the brunt of foot traffic, toolboxes and spills during a refit. Gives a non-slip boat deck surface that absorbs spills before they stain.
Use: ALLProtect Original, Red or MarineLiner
Test a small area first on teak. On deeply textured non-skid, press firmly and check the edges, since adhesion is lower on rough surfaces.
Cabin Soles & Yacht Flooring
Teak and holly soles, marine vinyl, EVA foam and marine carpet are expensive to replace. Padded protective floor covering protects all of them, and Red marks a clear walkway through the interior.
Use: ALLProtect Original or Red
Test first on any new flooring.
Varnished Joinery & Cabinetry
Fine joinery shows every scratch. ALLProtect has been residue-tested on flat and high-gloss wood finishes.
Use: ALLProtect Original
Varnish must be fully cured before covering.
Upholstery, Fabric & Leather
Interior marine linings, fabric panels and leather seating need protection that won’t snag or stain. Yacht crews trust it for yacht fabric protection, wood and leather.
Use: ALLProtect Original
Companionways & Stairs
Steps are where slips happen. The Stair Kit gives pre-sized, non-slip stair protection treads with a railing wrap, and in safety red it marks every step.
Use: ALLProtect Red, Original or MarineLiner
Swim Platforms, Transoms & Boarding Areas
The busiest entry points on board see wet feet, gear and constant traffic. Non-slip footing that holds even when wet.
Use: ALLProtect Original or Red
Stainless Rails & Stanchions
Railings and stanchions take knocks from equipment and ladders. The Three-Pack (Original) and the Stair Kit railing wrap (Original or Red) mold around curves, and Red makes rails easy to see.
Use: ALLProtect Original or Red
Test first on polished metal.
Windows, Portlights & Hatches
Protects glass from scratches during cleanup while keeping cabins lit, since daylight passes through.
Use: ALLProtect White, or ALLProtect Original where light isn’t needed
Test first on acrylic; check glass in direct sun.
Galley Countertops
Stone and solid-surface galley counters are costly to repair. Padded countertop protection shields them during work.
Use: ALLProtect Original
Not for food contact; remove before galley use.
Helm & Consoles
Electronics, switches and dash surrounds are easily scratched. Cuts and folds cleanly around tight corners and gauges.
Use: MarineLiner or ALLProtect Original

Custom Cuts, Kits & Logo Printing
Protection made to fit your boats and your brand
Production builders and refit yards protect the same shapes again and again, and every boat in the yard is seen by clients. Two options help with both: protection cut and kitted to fit your exact parts, and protection printed with your logo.

Custom Cuts & Kits
Get the exact fit for every hull
We customize ALLProtect to fit your project exactly, from pre-cut pieces for frequent use to complete kits that cover every inch of a yacht or workboat. For fixed sizes and shapes you need in larger quantities, pieces can be factory-cut and pre-packaged in kits for specific dimensions and shapes, allowing quick onsite fitting while saving time and labor costs.
- Large Roll (39.37″), or band-saw cut to any width with a clean factory edge
- Two-Pack (19.69″) for walkways and narrow decks
- Three-Pack (13″) for stanchions, rails and curves
- Stair Kit with railing wrap for companionways
- Factory-cut kits for fixed sizes and shapes in larger quantities, pre-packaged for quick onsite fitting
- Perforated roll that tears off every 19.69″ (50 cm) for smaller pieces, a time-saver and safety feature with no sharp cutting tools on deck

Custom Logo Printing
Your advert in the boatyard
Turn protection into marketing. Your company logo is printed directly on the roll, seen by every client and visitor who walks the yard or steps aboard.
- Available on MarineLiner and the ALLProtect line
- Full-color printing of your logo
- Low minimums: no large orders required
- No plate fees on standard sizes
- Custom roll sizes made to order for printed jobs
Perforated Rolls: Tear, Don’t Cut
ALLProtect Original is also available as a perforated roll, with factory-made perforations every 19.69″ (50 cm). Crews tear off smaller pieces by hand for smaller projects instead of cutting, a time-saver and safety feature that keeps sharp cutting tools off finished decks.
Custom cuts, perforated rolls and logo-printed products are made to order. Contact us today for current availability, lead times and pricing.
Padded Protection vs. Tape, Film & Sheeting
How the common options compare on a boat
Boatyards use everything from masking tape to cardboard to protect finishes. Each has a place, but most were made for houses and paint jobs, not wet decks, curved surfaces and long refits. Here’s an honest look at where each option works, and where it falls short aboard.
| Option | Good for | Limits on a boat |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-mask tape & masking paper | Crisp paint lines and masking edges | No padding, slow on large areas, can leave residue, and tape left too long can end up buried under coats of varnish |
| Plastic & masking film | Overspray and dust on vertical surfaces | Slippery underfoot, no impact protection, edges need taping, and it can trap condensation |
| Diamond-plate plastic sheeting | Rigid cover for traffic lanes | Shifts unless taped, and can leave “ghost” diamond marks on gelcoat from trapped moisture and uneven UV |
| Cardboard & hardboard | Low-cost impact cover on dry, flat floors | Soaks through when wet, slides on decks, curls in humidity, and is usually single-use |
| Foam, bubble wrap & rubber mats | Cushioning during transport or staging | Loose and easy to trip on, and doesn’t conform to stairs, rails or curves |
| Shrink wrap & canvas covers | Whole-boat weather protection in storage | Not a walking surface, and doesn’t protect finishes from work happening aboard |
| Clear films, PPF & ceramic coatings | Long-term protection of finishes in use | Permanent or semi-permanent, with no padding, absorbency or non-slip footing for active work, so they need protecting during refits too |
| SurfaceLiner padded, tape-free temporary protection | Active work: impact, spills, foot traffic and wet decks, with non-slip footing, no tape and reuse from job to job | Not for still-curing finishes, and not fire-retardant, so keep it clear of open flames and direct sparks. Test first on sensitive surfaces. |
Safety on Board
Non-slip footing, clear walkways and hazard marking
A boat under construction or refit is a hard place to work safely: slick gelcoat, wet decks, narrow companionways and tools everywhere. The right temporary protection does more than prevent damage. It gives crews secure footing and makes hazards easier to see.

Non-Slip Boat Decks
ALLProtect Original and ALLProtect Red carry a GS3/R12 slip-resistance rating from the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (bfu). Their absorbent top layer soaks up water and spills instead of leaving them standing on the deck. MarineLiner has an anti-slip film on top and an anti-slip backing that holds it in place, for secure footing on fiberglass during fabrication and assembly.
Use: ALLProtect Original, ALLProtect Red or MarineLiner
Marked Walkways
OSHA’s shipyard housekeeping standard (29 CFR 1915.81) asks employers to eliminate slippery conditions on walkways and working surfaces and keep them as dry as practicable. ALLProtect Red lays out a clear, padded and absorbent route through the boat so crews and visitors stay on it.
Use: ALLProtect Red
Hazard Marking
Use ALLProtect Red to outline step edges, hatch openings, companionways and boarding areas. The bright color shows where a surface changes, especially in dim interiors.
Use: ALLProtect Red
Remove Before Underway
Temporary protection is for work and storage, not for use underway. Remove it before the boat is moved or launched. ALLProtect Red makes this easy to check: its bright color stands out at a glance, so it’s harder to miss when work is done. The products are also flammable and not fire-retardant, so keep them clear of open flames, direct sparks and heat sources.
Use: Applies to all products; ALLProtect Red is easiest to spot
Boat Building Surface Protection
When protection starts at each stage of a new build
Fiberglass and custom boat builders face the same problem on every hull: the finish is at its best the moment it leaves the mold, and then weeks of rigging, systems and fit-out happen on top of it. Here’s where temporary protection fits into each stage of the build.
1
In the Mold
Gelcoat and laminate are still curing, and the part is protected by the mold itself. No temporary protection goes on yet.
2
Demolding & Hull-to-Deck Join
Once the part is out of the mold and the gelcoat is fully cured, it’s at its most vulnerable. Cover decks, cockpit soles and swim platforms with a padded boat liner as soon as possible, before crews start walking on them. Production builders can order factory-cut kits sized to each hull model.
Use: MarineLiner
3
Rigging, Systems & Engines
Wiring, plumbing, engine installation and hardware bring the heaviest traffic of the build. Upgrade high-traffic areas to ALLProtect Original, and mark companionways and boarding areas with ALLProtect Red. On long builds, check protection every 2–4 weeks and replace worn pieces.
Use: ALLProtect Original and ALLProtect Red
4
Interior Fit-Out & Joinery
Cabin soles, joinery, upholstery and galley counters go in, and windows and hatches are installed. Protect each surface as it’s finished, and use ALLProtect White on glass to keep cabins bright. Protect varnished or painted joinery only once it’s fully cured.
Use: MarineLiner, ALLProtect Original and ALLProtect White
5
Final Detailing & Delivery
Remove protection area by area as detailing finishes, and inspect each surface. ALLProtect Red’s bright color makes it easy to confirm that nothing is left aboard before sea trials or delivery.
Use: All products; ALLProtect Red is easiest to spot
ALLProtect can be lifted and reused at the next stage or on the next hull, and MarineLiner can be reused as long as its backing stays clean.
Boat & Yacht Refit Surface Protection
How to protect a boat or yacht during a refit
Boat and yacht refit surface protection is temporary, padded covering laid over everything that stays aboard (teak, joinery, upholstery, carpet, counters and glass) while demolition, sanding, painting and new installation happen around it. It keeps finishes undamaged from the first day of work to handover, even with several trades aboard at once.
1
Agree on What Stays
Walk the boat with the captain or project manager and list every surface that stays and needs protecting.
2
Protect Finishes on Day One
Before tools come aboard, cover cabin soles, stairs, joinery and counters with ALLProtect Original. Use translucent ALLProtect White on windows and hatches to keep cabins bright.
Use: ALLProtect Original and ALLProtect White
3
Mark One Route for Every Trade
Painters, electricians, carpenters and upholsterers share the same companionways. Mark the main route with ALLProtect Red so every crew uses the same path. It’s padded and self-adhesive, so it stays put underfoot without tape.
Use: ALLProtect Red
4
Protect New Flooring and Finishes as They’re Completed
Cover new carpet and flooring as soon as it’s laid, using ALLProtect Original, or MarineLiner for hard flooring. Wait until freshly varnished or painted joinery is fully cured before covering it.
Use: ALLProtect Original; MarineLiner for hard flooring
5
Inspect During Long Refits
Check protection every 2–4 weeks and replace worn pieces.
6
Remove and Inspect Before Handover
Remove protection area by area and inspect each surface. ALLProtect Red’s bright color makes it easy to confirm nothing has been left aboard.
Use: All products; ALLProtect Red is easiest to spot
Why Not Just Use Tape and Paper?
Refits run for weeks or months. Masking tape left on a deck that long can bake on in the sun, and tape that’s forgotten can end up varnished over and buried under the new finish. Paper and plastic sheeting need taping down and shift underfoot. Padded protection that holds itself in place without tape avoids all of these problems.
How Much Marine Surface Protection Do You Need?
Roll sizes, coverage and planning tips

Measure the areas you want to protect in square feet, add about 10% for overlaps, edges and trimming, then divide by the coverage of the roll you’re using.
Roll Sizes and Coverage
| Product | Roll size | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| MarineLiner | 39.37 in × 164 ft (1 m × 50 m) | 538 sq ft |
| ALLProtect Original or Red, Large Roll | 39.37 in × 82 ft (1 m × 25 m) | 269 sq ft |
| ALLProtect Original Perforated Roll | 39.37 in × 98.4 ft (1 m × 30 m), tears every 19.69 in | 323 sq ft |
| ALLProtect Two-Pack | 2 rolls, 19.69 in × 82 ft each | 269 sq ft total |
| ALLProtect Original Three-Pack | 3 rolls, 13 in × 82 ft each | 269 sq ft total |
| ALLProtect Stair Kit | 3 rolls, 24 in × 82 ft each, plus a 2.76 in railing wrap | 511 sq ft total |
| ALLProtect White | 39.37 in × 164 ft (1 m × 50 m), also available perforated | 538 sq ft |
Example: A yacht refit that needs 400 sq ft of cabin soles and walkways covered needs 400 + 10% = 440 sq ft, so two Large Rolls of ALLProtect Original (538 sq ft).
Planning Tips
- Cold-weather work: MarineLiner sticks best on surfaces between 41°F and 104°F, and colder surfaces reduce adhesion. Let rolls warm to room temperature before applying.
- Long projects: Inspect protection and the surface underneath every 2–4 weeks.
- Reuse: ALLProtect can be lifted and reused, and MarineLiner can be cleaned, rolled up and used again, which lowers the cost per job.
- Not sure how much you need? Send us your boat length and the areas you want covered, and we’ll estimate it for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Temporary marine surface protection, answered
What is temporary marine surface protection?
Temporary marine surface protection is a padded covering laid over boat surfaces during building, refits and repairs to prevent scratches, dents, stains and spills. SurfaceLiner’s range includes MarineLiner, a light-tack boat liner for fiberglass and gelcoat, and the self-adhesive ALLProtect line (Original, Red and White). All are removed once the work is done.
How is temporary boat protection different from PPF or a ceramic coating?
PPF and ceramic coatings are long-term finishes that protect a boat in use. Temporary protection is a padded, absorbent, non-slip layer for active work: it takes dropped tools, foot traffic and spills, then comes off. Coated or wrapped surfaces still need temporary protection during a refit.
Which marine surface protection product is right for my boat or yacht?
Use MarineLiner for fiberglass and gelcoat during new builds, ALLProtect Original for heavy traffic and longer jobs, ALLProtect Red for walkways and hazard marking, and ALLProtect White for windows and hatches where you want daylight. The selector table above matches each job to a product.
How do you install and remove marine surface protection?
Roll it out over a clean, dry surface, cut it to size with a utility knife or tear along the perforations, and press it down. ALLProtect’s self-adhesive backing and MarineLiner’s light-tack backing hold it in place without tape. To remove it, lift a corner and peel it back, then roll it up for reuse.
How do you protect a yacht during a refit?
Agree on what stays, protect finishes on day one before tools come aboard, mark one route for every trade with ALLProtect Red, protect new flooring as it’s completed, inspect every 2–4 weeks, and remove protection before handover. The refit section above walks through each step.
Can temporary surface protection go on fresh paint, varnish or gelcoat?
No. Apply temporary protection only once paint, varnish or gelcoat is fully cured, following the coating manufacturer’s cure time. The products are vapor-resistant, so covering a finish that’s still releasing solvents can trap them against the surface and affect the finish. On a tight refit schedule, protect the surrounding areas first and cover the fresh finish once it has cured.
Is temporary boat deck protection non-slip when wet?
ALLProtect Original and ALLProtect Red carry a GS3/R12 slip-resistance rating, and their absorbent top layer soaks up water and spills instead of leaving them standing. MarineLiner has an anti-slip top film and backing, but no published slip rating.
Does yacht surface protection leave residue on teak, stainless or glass?
ALLProtect has been residue-tested on painted aluminum, flat and high-gloss wood finishes, and plated knobs under high heat, humidity and freezing conditions. MarineLiner is residue-free; please ensure no liquid sits between the surface and MarineLiner’s Opticoat underside for prolonged periods.
How do you protect yacht windows and glass during work?
Use ALLProtect White, a translucent, padded and self-adhesive window protection that keeps cabins bright. Where daylight isn’t needed or heavier impact is likely, use ALLProtect Original instead.
How long can marine surface protection stay outdoors?
MarineLiner is for short-term outdoor use only. ALLProtect Original and Red are built for weeks of exposure. ALLProtect White can stay on glass for up to 2 months of UV exposure, but above 104°F its adhesive can transfer. Inspect protection every 2–4 weeks on long jobs.
Is temporary marine surface protection fire-retardant?
No. MarineLiner and the ALLProtect line are flammable and not fire-retardant. Keep them clear of open flames, direct sparks, heat guns and other heat sources, and clear them from the immediate area before hot work begins. Where regulations or the yard require fire-rated protection, use FR-rated materials instead.
Can surface protection stay on while the boat is underway?
No. Remove all temporary protection before the boat is moved, launched or taken to sea. ALLProtect Red’s bright color makes it easy to check that nothing has been left aboard.
Is boat surface protection reusable?
Yes. ALLProtect can be lifted and reused from one stage or hull to the next, and MarineLiner can be cleaned, rolled up and used again as long as its backing stays clean. Reuse lowers the cost per job and cuts waste compared with single-use paper, cardboard and plastic sheeting. Replace pieces once they’re worn, torn or heavily soiled.
Can a boat liner be used as permanent boat flooring?
No. It’s temporary protection for work and storage. For permanent boat flooring, look at marine vinyl, EVA foam decking or teak.
Can surface protection be used on yacht galley counters?
Yes, to protect galley counters during building, refits and repairs. A padded layer shields stone, solid-surface and wood counters from dropped tools, scratches and spills. The products aren’t approved for food contact, so remove them before the galley is used for food.
