Hardwood Floors
Hardwood and parquet floors — including parquet sealed or oiled on site — are among the most vulnerable surfaces on any construction job site. Stone, Tile & Ceramic
Marble, slate, travertine, ceramic and porcelain tile all share the same vulnerability — freshly laid grout and adhesive need time to cure before taking heavy traffic. Vapor’s breathable construction lets moisture escape naturally from below while the waterproof top layer keeps liquids, paint and debris from reaching the surface above. No bubbling, no staining, no scratched finishes. This makes Vapor especially useful in bathrooms and kitchens, where newly sealed tile and grout are both moisture-sensitive and in constant contact with water.
Concrete Floors
Concrete continues releasing moisture well after it’s safe to walk on — curing can take weeks to fully complete, even once foot traffic is approved. Always confirm the concrete is cured and approved for foot traffic per the flooring contractor’s guidance before covering, and observe Vapor’s minimum 72-hour cure window. As a construction floor protection solution, Vapor is built to handle exactly this kind of ongoing risk: even cured concrete stays vulnerable to job-site hazards like paint, spills and debris. Vapor’s vapor-permeable polyethylene film allows that moisture to escape upward while blocking those liquids and debris from penetrating down to the surface below.
Countertops
Newly installed stone, quartz and wood countertops — along with cabinetry and millwork nearby — are expensive and easily scratched during finishing work. Stairs
Stairs need dedicated stair tread protection — they take more abuse than any other surface on a construction site, from heavy boots and dropped tools to equipment and constant foot traffic. Vapor’s Opticoat™ non-slip backing and padded top layer absorb impact from dropped tools and building materials, while providing a safe, stable working surface on each tread and riser — available in a complete stair kit for fast installation.
Important: Before laying Vapor, confirm the surface is clean and dry, with no oils, solvents or residue that could interfere with the backing’s grip. Switch off floor heating prior to laying. New surfaces should be covered after a minimum of 72 hours. Excess humidity must be extracted beforehand. Ideal room temperature 50°F to 77°F. Always observe the flooring manufacturer’s recommended drying and curing times before applying any surface protection.

Why Newly Finished Floors Need Breathable Protection
On a construction job site, the margin for error on a newly finished floor is thin — one mistake can turn a completed job into a callback. This is exactly why breathable, temporary floor protection matters on every job site. Vapor can eliminate unnecessary damage, shorten your punch list, reduce delays and labor costs due to reworks.
When a floor is freshly finished — whether it’s hardwood sealed with oil or varnish, natural stone grouted and sealed, or cured concrete — it isn’t done yet. The finish, adhesive, grout or sealant is still releasing moisture and solvents as it cures. That process can take anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks depending on the product, the surface and the conditions on site.
The Problem: Standard floor protection — plastic sheeting, plastic film, tape (including seam tape), rigid plastic boards, corrugated cardboard, coated paper rolls, and even some nonwoven products with a solid plastic backing — is that they trap moisture underneath. When moisture can’t escape it builds up between the protection and the floor surface. The result is bubbling, warping and finish failure — and in some cases, trapped moisture creates the damp, enclosed conditions mold needs to grow, adding a health hazard on top of the cosmetic damage. How To Install Vapor Floor Protection

1. Prep the Surface
Confirm the flooring manufacturer’s cure time has been met, clear debris, and check room temperature is between 50°F and 77°F.
2. Roll It Out
Position Vapor over the area with the Opticoat™ backing facing down, directly onto the surface you’re protecting.
3. Cut to Fit
Trim edges, doorways and stair returns with scissors or a utility knife — no special tools required.
4. Press and Go

How is Vapor different from plastic, paper and cardboard floor protection?
Plastic film and sheeting, tape, corrugated cardboard and coated paper protection are non-breathable — they trap moisture and solvents underneath, which can cause bubbling, warping and finish failure on newly finished floors. Vapor’s vapor-permeable top film lets that moisture escape and evaporate naturally while still blocking liquids, paint and debris from reaching the surface. Plastic, paper and cardboard are also single-use, while Vapor is reusable, padded and non-slip.
Does Vapor work on all types of flooring?
Vapor works as hardwood floor protection, as well as on stone, tile, ceramic, concrete, screed and carpet. It’s specifically designed for newly finished or curing surfaces where breathability matters. For floors with especially high moisture content, contact us about our Solprotec product line instead.
What causes moisture to build up under non-breathable floor protection?
As a newly finished floor cures, it releases a thin layer of moisture through condensation — especially when the floor’s surface temperature is cooler than the surrounding air. Non-breathable protection traps that moisture instead of letting it escape, which can cause efflorescence (a white, powdery salt deposit) on concrete and stone, or cupping and crowning on hardwood as the boards absorb excess moisture unevenly. Vapor’s vapor-permeable top film is designed specifically to let this moisture escape and evaporate instead of trapping it.
Will Vapor trap moisture under my newly finished floor?
No. Vapor is specifically engineered to prevent this. The polyethylene top film is permeable to water vapor, so moisture and solvents from curing finishes, grout or adhesive can continue evaporating normally instead of being sealed in. This is the core difference between Vapor and standard non-breathable protection.
Does Vapor leave residue or damage the floor when removed?
No. Vapor uses an anti-slip Opticoat™ backing instead of tape or strong adhesive. This patented backing is actually rolled onto the film in the factory. This application covers the individual fibers in a non-adhesive pressure-activated coating rather than adhesive or tape. It holds firmly in place during use but peels up clean, without leaving residue or damaging the surface underneath.
How breathable is Vapor compared to standard floor protection?
Vapor is a vapor permeable floor protection system tested to a water vapour permeability rating that allows moisture and solvents to pass through and evaporate, rather than becoming trapped beneath the material. This is what separates true breathable protection from products that only claim breathability without any tested rating behind it.
What is the “sandpaper effect,” and does Vapor prevent it?
The sandpaper effect happens when dust, grit or construction debris gets trapped underneath temporary floor protection. If the material shifts or slides underfoot, that trapped debris drags across the floor and grinds against the finish — acting like sandpaper and leaving scratches or dulling the sheen. Single-use disposable products are especially prone to this, since they shift and bunch with regular foot traffic. Vapor’s Opticoat™ backing is completely non-slip — it won’t bunch or shift, protecting both your surfaces and your job site employees from a damaging, hazardous sandpaper effect.
How long does one roll of Vapor last on a job site?
One roll of Vapor typically lasts months on an active job site with normal use. Because it’s reusable and durable, most contractors use the same roll across multiple projects rather than buying disposable protection for every job.
Can Vapor be used over underfloor heating?
Yes. Switch off underfloor heating before laying Vapor, per standard installation guidance. Once Vapor is in place, the heating can be safely turned back on.
Is Vapor safe to use indoors with no ventilation?
Yes. Vapor contains zero VOCs and does not require a respirator under normal use, making it safe for enclosed indoor spaces with limited ventilation.
Can Vapor be used on stairs, countertops, and other non-flat surfaces?
Yes. Vapor cuts easily with scissors or a utility knife, so it can be custom-fit to stairs, treads, risers, countertops and other irregular shapes — not just flat floors.
Is Vapor only for contractors, or can it be used for moving and appliance delivery too?
